Work carried out during an artist residency in the city of Barcelona, Spain (Espronceda, Centre for Art and Culture), which has as one of its tourist attractions the Columbus Monument.
The lookout is a tribute to Christopher Columbus, the famous Italian navigator, whose statue sits atop a Corinthian column. Columbus points in a direction, as if indicating a path to the Indies, to the Americas, or perhaps to the routes that unfolded from the encounter between the Spanish and Indigenous peoples... Copies of a souvenir of the Columbus statue were made in lead and exhibited in the gallery with the following instructions: take a piece for 1 euro; deposit the money in the cup. The port where the tower with Columbus pointing the way is located is also an area with a high concentration of immigrant-run businesses. Perhaps Columbus is not pointing us toward a single path, but rather toward diasporas, encounters, and ruptures between continents.
