Stones, white paper, and scissors for audience interaction
Paper pieces of variable size and quantity
Video duration: 10'51"
Video documentation of an action created from the children's game "rock, paper, scissors."
A game popular in many cultures, in which children make hand gestures to represent each of the three elements, is here replaced by the objects themselves. In reference to the Do It Yourself (DIY) format, widely spread on the internet over the past decades, the video presents instructions and methods for the audience to build small mountains by moulding paper sheets over stones, river pebbles, and beach rocks.
Rock, paper, scissors proposes a playful state of attention, in which the video — made with minimal elements and a neutral setting — evokes an almost scientific austerity in the act of playing. On the other hand, in the exhibition space, stones and papers are scattered so that the audience can sit on the floor and create small mountain ranges. The intention is to propose the creation of topographies through folding — a kind of reverse origami — and the experience of touching the artwork as a gesture of simultaneous creation and appreciation.
